Boxing: Ryan Garcia revealed to his father why he lost to Gervonta Davis

Publish date: 2024-08-06

Ryan Garcia wasn't able to keep Gervonta Davis at bay in the seventh round of their much-anticipated boxing match in Las Vegas, and his father, Henry Garcia, believes there is an explanation behind it.

Ryan reportedly confessed to his father after the fight that he felt "drained" and was unable to recover from Gervonta Davis' body shots.

Henry Garcia maintains that, as his son entered the ring, he informed his father that his legs were drained due to the rehydration clause established prior to the bout.

"If he had not accepted those conditions, this fight would not have happened. He told me personally, 'Dad, as soon as I got in the ring I felt like my legs were gone, but I wanted this fight.' It's something he had always dreamed of," Henry Garcia said.

What is the rehydration clause?

The rehydration clause was inserted into the contract at the request of Gervonta Davis in an effort to make the fight as fair as possible.

Davis cited his opponents size and physicality as a principal reason behind the inclusion of the clause: "It's just to make sure everything is fair. He's a bigger fighter physically. He has an advantage in height, size, arm length.... Everything."

The weight limit for this bout was 136 pounds, which meant that Ryan Garcia had to cut his weight down and keep it below the threshold.

The first weigh-in takes place one day before the fight and from that point on, fighters are not allowed to rehydrate freely in order not to gain weight prior to the fight.

What's next for Ryan Garcia?

Henry Garcia has said that, despite his son's loss to Davis, Ryan is in good spirits and is ready to look for another fight.

"They're going to see a lot more of Ryan, but at 140 (pounds)," Henry Garcia said.

"The doctor checked him out and said he's fine; he asked him to take a couple of months to rest before returning."
