Bob received a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship to attend Yale College, where he double-majored in history and English literature. He graduated with his B.A. in 1965 and enlisted in the US Navy for a 5-year stint.
He served as one of the two personnel tasked with transporting or managing the nuclear launch codes that the USS Wright carried while acting as a NECPA. Additionally, he served as the USS Fox’s communications officer under Admiral Robert O. Welander.
After being released from service as a lieutenant in August 1970, he enrolled at George Washington University to study Shakespeare and international relations at the graduate level. Before joining The Washington Post in 1971 as a correspondent, he spent a year working for the Montgomery Sentinel.
