Cambria County little league donates to Groundhog Little League, challenges others
JOHNSTOWN - A Cambria County little league organization is stepping up to help a neighboring little league whose concession stand was destroyed.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League's concession stand was destroyed by a fire on June 13.
After hearing about the loss, West Suburban Little League (WSLL) President Adam Weir said he knew his team had to do something.
"We teach our kids to be a good teammates inside and outside the dugout," Weir said. "It's just our natural duty to want to reach out and help a little league that needs our help."
Weir said he understands the importance of a concession stand. He said theirs pays for most of the upgrades to their fields, umpires and field crews.
WSLL is giving Punxsutawney a new popcorn machine and hot dog machine.
The organization is also waiving all entry fees for the Groundhog Little League to play in their July tournaments. WSLL will also be collecting donations for the Groundhog Little League during those tournaments.
"We are lucky enough to have money in our coffers through our concession stand and anything can help them," Weir said. "We figured equipment would be beneficial because it would just generate money for them for years to come."
WSLL isn't stopping there. They're challenging other organizations to do the same.
"I would love to call out all the little leagues, District 11 especially, to donate to Punxsutawney and help them out," Weir said. "We are all one big family."
Groundhog Little League President Brian Hallman said the organization is very appreciative and grateful for WSLL's help.
Since the fire, the Groundhog Little League has raised around $1,300 through its GoFundMe and bank account at S&T Bank in Punxsutawney.
Donations can also be mailed it to Hallman at 508 West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
