With the Intelligence Unit losing a longtime team member, it’s understandable why fans want to know about Chicago P.D. Season 12’s cast and who could join the NBC drama to replace Detective Hailey Upton. Well, they might’ve already introduced her and fans aren’t exactly happy.
Who’s in the Chicago P.D. Season 12 cast?
Of Chicago P.D.‘s main cast, only one cast member has confirmed their exit from the series after Season 11: Tracy Spiridakos, who played Detective Hailey Upton from Seasons 5 to 11. Upton left Chicago P.D. in the Season 11 finale, “More,” after a dangerous case involving a serial killer almost led to her and Sergeant Hank Voight’s deaths. At the end of the episode, Upton revealed that she was leaving the Intelligence Unit to focus on herself and also train for the FBI.
Other than Spiridakos, no other cast members have announced their exits, which means that all six of Chicago P.D.‘s remaining series regulars are expected to return for Season 12: Jason Beghe (Sergeant Hank Voight); Patrick Fleuger (Officer Adam Ruzek); Marina Squerciati (Officer Kim Burgess); LaRoyce Hawkins (Officer Kevin Atwater); Amy Morton (Sergeant Trudy Platt); and Benjamin Levy Aguilar (Officer Dante Torres). Of the remaining series regulars, four are original cast members on Chicago P.D.: Beghe, Fleuger, Squerciati, and Hawkins.
With Spiridakos out, there’s room for at least one new cast member to join Chicago P.D. and replace her. Fans speculate that that new cast member could be Bojana Novakovic, who joined as Detective Jo Petrovic during Spiridakos’ last season in Season 11, Episode 7, “The Living and the Dead.”

Spiridakos, for her part, also joined Chicago P.D. in a recurring role during Sophia Bush (Detective Erin Lindsay’s) last season in Season 4 before she was promoted to a series regular in Season 5. While Chicago P.D. hasn’t confirmed. that Petrovic is Upton’s replacement at the Intelligence Unit, fans theorize that the series used Upton’s final season to introduce her before she became an official main cast member in Season 12 — like what Season 4 did with Upton and Lindsay.
Whether viewers are fans of Petrovic is a different story. “I like the *idea* of her. I’ve argued for years that a department called Intelligence should be more intelligent, rather than just tapping phones and throwing whoever they don’t shoot at in the cage. I think a profiler would be a good addition to balance out the group,” a fan wrote on Reddit in March 2024 before explaining how Petrovic is too much like Chicago P.D.’s newest character, Torres. “That said, I don’t just don’t care for the character as written. The last major character (Torres) is already playing the ‘say as little as possible and be mysterious’ role. Plus we did the substance issue thing with Lindsay already (though I’m sure it wouldn’t be the first police unit ever with two people each having drinking problems). And if she can’t be trusted, she’s not going to get brought in.”
Another fan also expressed their disapproval of Petrovic as Upton’s replacement based on the lack of screen time other, more established characters have gotten. “Not feeling the new profiler, the mfs that have been on there barely get time distributed evenly now they want to add another cast member,” the user wrote. “Torres shows up and gets taken out every other episode or two, Atwater and Ruzek hardly get screen time and they all spend more time upstairs in the district talking than being out on the street. I love Chicago PD still but at this point they need to get back to some serious matters. Law and Order Organized Crime is by far the best show in the Dick Wolf universe at this point.”
Others, however, were intrigued by Petrovic’s alcoholism storyline. “Pretty sure she will be Hailey’s replacement. Not sure how they will deal with the alcoholism or just keep it a secret,” a fan wrote. Another fan wrote, “I think Jo is incredibly smart but emotionally deficient. She may be on the autism spectrum. I think if she gets help for her alcohol addiction she could be a very good addition to the team.” One more fan wrote, “I think having a profiler means the team will get more serial killer cases in the future.”
