CPI dedicates, renames transportation center in honor of Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc.
PLEASANT GAP – A new name has been given to part of the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.
The CPI Transportation Training Center was dedicated and renamed Tuesday inhonor of Glenn and Thelma Hawbaker, a couple who began their construction company in Centre County in 1952.
The Hawbaker company first started contracting in State College.
After over 60 years in operation, the family was recognized for its leadership in the construction industry and for its longtime support of CPI.
The couple are also known for their dedication to the community. Just last year, the company donated thousands of dollars to help fund school projects.
The Hawbakers' son Dan, who is now the president and CEO of the company, says he was overwhelmed to see the amount of support and number of people who came out to the special occasion.
"I think my parents would be very proud to know what they started had that kind of an impact with something that's being built upon for future generations," Dan Hawbaker said.
Hawbaker says this is just another step to not only helping their family build careers but also others build careers.
"It's honoring those people who had a vision and stepped up and help(ed) provide the economic support as well as the visionary guidance and provide(d) a quality education system here," 171st Legislative District state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff said.
