'Nothing Can Be Saved': Explosion Destroys Family-Run Business In Colonie

Publish date: 2024-05-31

Multiple agencies in Albany County were called at around 3:15 a.m. Thursday, April 4, for an explosion in Colonie at the Pad Thai Noodle restaurant on Everett Road.

Crews arrived to find the single-story building, which also houses The Healing Meals, heavily damaged and on fire, Colonie Police Lt. Robert Donnelly said.

Photos on social media showed large sections of the building’s roof peeled over on the ground alongside shards of broken glass.

The blaze was deemed under control by 3:30 a.m. after additional agencies were called in, including the Shaker Road-Loudonville, West Albany, Midway, and Menands fire departments.

Nobody was inside the restaurant at the time of the explosion and there were no reports of injuries. A nearby apartment building was evacuated out of precaution.

The Town of Colonie Fire Services is investigating the cause of the explosion.

In a Facebook post one day before the incident, the restaurant informed customers it was temporarily closed due to “equipment issues,” though it’s unclear whether that contributed to the blaze.

Sarinya Singthon, who runs Pad Thai Noodle with her parents and two brothers, told Daily Voice the restaurant was their only source of income. She said the entire building will have to be demolished.

“Everything my family has worked to build is gone, nothing can be saved,” she said. “We also help our family financially in Thailand, so this explosion does not just devastate my entire family here, but overseas.”

Everett Road remained closed Thursday evening near Kross Keys Drive.
