GOP senators sign letter refusing to cooperate with Dems after Trump conviction

Publish date: 2024-08-16

Several GOP senators on Friday signed a forceful letter to their Democratic colleagues revoking their cooperation on any legislation that does not affect the safety of the American people in the wake of the verdict against former President Donald Trump.

A Manhattan jury found the former president guilty Thursday on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The Trump campaign later reported earning a record $34.8 million across all small donors following the verdict.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, shared the letter via X, noting “strongly worded statements are not enough.”

Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable,” the senator added. “We are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations, and we invite all concerned Senators to join our stand.”

Also signing the message were Sens. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Roger Marshall, R-Kan., J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

“The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways,” the letter reads. “As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.”

The letter continues, noting the senators will no longer allow Democrats to increase non-security spending, confirm political justice appointees or pass legislation unrelated to security.

I hope to have every Republican senator sign this,” Sen. Lee added. “This is a call for Senate Republican Conference unity. Now is a time for choosing. Will we let the Republic fall or are we going to do something about it?”

The stern message follows letters from the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on Friday demanding testimonies from two key Trump prosecutors.

“This hearing will examine actions by state and local prosecutors to engage politically motivated prosecutors of federal officials, in particular the recent political prosecution of President Donald Trump by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office." Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, wrote in the letters.
