HBO releases trailer for comedy special 'Yvonne Orji: Momma, I Made It!'
WASHINGTON (SBG) - Actor Yvonne Orji, best known for her role as Molly on “Insecure”, is headlining her first comedy special, "Yvonne Orji: Momma, I Made It!" and it’s set to premiere June 6 on HBO.
The trailer, which was first teased on Thursday, features the 36-year-old performing a live stand-up routine at the Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. along with footage of her trip to her native country -- Nigeria.
In a post on Instagram, Orji said it was only right she included both of her homes, referring to Nigeria and the United States. The actress was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria and grew up in Maryland. Orji graduated with a master's degree in public health from George Washington University before moving to New York City to pursue a career in comedy in 2009, according to the Ringer.
The poster for the special shows Orji, dressed in green and white two-piece suit, holding onto a vintage microphone while sitting on a throne. Under the title of the poster it says, "It was either this or medical school." In an interview with the Ringer, Orji admitted her parents were not thrilled she didn't pursue their dream for her of going to medical school.
“What a moment it was to bring cameras all the way to Lagos AND deep in the village to get a sneak peek into the family that birth my funny,” she wrote on Instagram. “And then finally bringing it full circle to the DMV and taping in front of two sold-out crowds at the Howard Theater. It’s been a LOOOONG journey, but how sweet it is, to finally be able to say, #MOMMAiMadeIt!”
The hour-long special was written and produced by Orji.
