Pitt-Johnstown students begin "shelter in place," stop spread of COVID-19 before holidays
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — With rising COVID-19 case numbers, schools across the region are adjusting their plans and schedules to stop the spread. In Cambria County, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is moving to a shelter in place. This is to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 before students return home for winter break.
The university described the shelter in place policy as a way to stop the spread of COVID-19 before the holidays, when majority of their students return home. The shelter in place is strongly encouraged to begin at least 10 days before students plan to leave campus. This means students should only interact with their roommates or other people within their pods. The university says there are limited gathering spaces and they are only to attend class and grab essential around campus. Since the start of the fall semester, the university’s dashboards says UPJ has seen 57 positive COVID-19 cases among students and six staff members. There are currently eight UPJ students who have active COVID-19 cases and are in isolation, according to the university’s dashboard. UPJ’s director of communications, Eric Sloss released the following statement regarding the shelter in place:
“The University of Pittsburgh’s COVID-19 Medical Response Office (CMRO) issued a shelter-in-place policy for Pitt-Johnstown students to help protect family, friends, and loved ones at home as the students plan travel at the end of the fall term. In addition to limiting close contacts and interacting virtually whenever possible, the CMRO recommends students develop a plan in consultation with their families to ensure that everyone involved is aware of and comfortable with the precautions students plan to take as they transition home for the holidays.”Read more about UPJ’s COVID-19 policies, here.
