Police Officer Stabbed In Neck During Incident In Area

It happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 in the City of Poughkeepsie.

Officers from the City of Poughkeepsie Police and workers from the Mobil Crisis Team responded to 25 Smith St. for a report of a man experiencing mental health problems, City of Poughkeepsie PD Det. Lt. MJ Clark said.

Immediately upon entering the apartment, the man, 32-year-old Jalil Smith, came after the police officers with a screwdriver, police said.

Smith was tased to stop his attack, according to police. 

After being tased, a violent struggle ensued between Smith and the two police officers, said police. 

During the struggle, Smith was able to stab one of the officers in the neck, said police. 

The violent struggled continued until the officers were able to subdue Smith, according to police. 

The officer, a 14-year veteran of the department, was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital where he was treated for the stab wound to his neck and other cuts to his face and head. He was later released.

Smith was charged with first-degree attempted murder, a Class B felony, and was held pending his arraignment.
