Richland Township police warn public about rise in crime

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP – After a series of robberies, Richland Township police said violent crime is on the rise in the area.

Authorities said residents are more likely to be confronted with a life-or-death situation.

Detective Kevin Gaudlip said it's best to be proactive because robberies happen unexpectedly.

He said people should ask themselves, “What would I do if I was robbed?”

He gave 6 News some recommendations for the public.

First, if you're being robbed and the person is armed, Gaudlip said to comply with all demands.

If the individual wants your money, jewelry or another valuable item, give it to them.

He said to always assume that a weapon is loaded and don't take for granted that the robber won't harm you.

If you don't have the means, don't try to overpower the person.

Gaudlip said there is a good possibility that if you put up a struggle, you can put yourself in more danger.

If you are in a public place, try to attract attention by screaming and yelling for help.

Police urge the public to call 911 as soon as possible.

Gaudlip said it's important to be a good witness. Any information that can help police can be helpful during an investigation.

"It’s important to look at that weapon but try to get as much information on the individual that is committing the robbery,” Gaudlip said. “Like the complete physical description, the build of the person, weight, height, skin color, eye color, hair, all that information."

Gaudlip said a cellphone is a great tool.

If you are able to take a picture or a video of the crime being committed or the person committing the crime, he said that can help police catch the perpetrator.
