YANCY Noll made headlines in 2012 after he was found dead in his car after Dinh Bowman shot him while driving home from work. Back then, his murder drew national attention and has since been the subject of multiple true crime specials.
Who was Yancy Noll?
Noll was known as a Seattle, Washington resident who many say lived an average life for a 42-year-old adult. He would often be seen with his girlfriend and dog climbing mountains when he was not working at the local Quality Food Centers store. According to the Seattle Times, his friend Brad Kenny described him as a gentleman with a huge, kind heart.
During his spare time, Noll would also reportedly volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and taught kids how to rock climb. Born in California and raised in Alaska, he settled in Seattle in the 1980s.
What happened to Yancy Noll?
While driving home from work, Noll encountered Dinh Bowman who claimed that an incident between the two of them had happened after he accidentally cut Noll off. Bowman stated that Noll had followed him off the highway and at a red light, he exploded in rage.
Bowman recounted the incident, saying, “I felt like it was just this crazy bad dream, and I was runnin’ from a monster. There was sort of a stream of swearin’. I think the phrase that caught my attention was ‘You better learn how to drive that fancy car, dick boy. Or you’re gonna get yourself f***ed up.'”
According to Noll’s friends, however, these allegations were false. They insisted that Noll, accused of road rage, was an extremely cautious driver and would never throw anything at anyone in traffic.
Despite the conflicting accounts, Bowman pulled out a gun and fatally shot Noll three times in the head.
Who is Dinh Bowman?
Thomasdinh “Dinh” Bowman, a former child prodigy turned convicted killer, was 28 years old at the time of Noll’s murder. At the age of 12, he entered college, and by his 20s, he had started his own boutique engineering company called Vague Industries, specializing in robotics.
In September 2012, Bowman was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, including a firearm enhancement. Initially claiming self-defense due to fear for his life during the interaction with Noll, he was later found guilty and sentenced to 29 years in prison.
King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Heller rejected Bowman’s self-defense claim, stating, “The jury rejected it, as do I. Yancy Noll had his hands on the steering wheel when he was shot three times in the head.”
Heller further criticized Bowman’s actions, saying, “Smart people, especially really smart people, don’t throw away the one piece of evidence that could corroborate their version of events.” This was in reference to Bowman’s testimony that he had thrown away the bottles Noll allegedly threw at him.
Due to Bowman’s “extreme lack of empathy” and the “random nature” of Noll’s killing, Judge Heller described the crime as “egregious and disturbing.”
